SESplan to consider Green Networks
21 September 2009

The potential to integrate the concept of green networks into the new Regional Development Plan for Edinburgh and the South East of Scotland (SESplan) is currently being evaluated by the team responsible for drawing up the plan.

The aim of SESplan is to consider the bigger picture overview for the development of the region, including important issues such as transport planning, housing development and infrastructure provision. A key issue for SESplan will be to consider the role of green networks and how these might contribute to the sustainable economic development of the region within the context of the wider environment.

“There has already been considerable interest in the work of ELFHNP in relation to green networks within the SESplan area”, Forest Habitat Officer, Ian Whitehead explained. “In this respect, the models developed by ELFHNP have provided a useful illustration of how habitats and greenspaces might be managed better to emphasise connectivity and varied benefits for local people. The approaches we’ve used with woodlands can equally be applied to other types of habitats including species rich grasslands and wetlands”.

The potential for a green network to bring benefits to the whole of the SESplan area is enormous. Ian Whitehead said, “It will be very beneficial if we can consider the bigger picture and habitat linkages to the surrounding SESplan areas including the Scottish Borders and Fife. As well as creating enhanced natural habitats, we should be considering the benefits for local people, walkers and cyclists.”

An important aspiration of the work with SESplan will be to tie in with the development of the Central Scotland Green Network concept which was recently announced in the new National Planning Framework (NPF2). Under the NPF2, local authorities, public bodies and organisations across Central Scotland will be working together closely to realise the vision  of an integrated green network stretching from the Forth to the Clyde.
